We have heard similar stories from females where older boys took advantage when they were 12 & certainly younger but - that's what we would call it. His recollection of his first sexual experience makes me wonder if that first encounter wired his brain to pursue these types of experiences. He does seem to have a healthy perspective on his habit, but I am surprised that he hasn't had any dangerous experiences, other than the traveler scam that he mentions.
