id: 517947 - Text: @ellp152 It kind of depends on what the norm is. If you have a group where your work is considered normal and respected, genuine friendships are possible. Historically, a lot of sex industry providers have had to hide our work from our families and friends we grew up with, in the U.S. And if you’re working independently and avoiding the streets, women are often very isolated and it’s depressing. It’s one reason a lot of women choose up with a pimp, in the U.S. I had women who were like family, when I did. Even in houses and some stables and even legal brothels, if it’s cut-throat competitive I’ve heard people say, “No one is your friend.” They seem to have established a work culture, where these ladies work, where they are able to form meaningful friendships and working relationships. They don’t have to tell their families they’re waiting tables, or hairdressers, when they visit. In a sense, it’s analogous to GLBT rights (even for cis women). It’s not analogous, in the sense that their job is about the needs of male sexuality and not their own. Yet, women are stigmatized as sexual freaks, in the U.S. The industry around foreign (to them) military men has such a history there, and is such a big part of the economy, I think it’s more normalized in Thailand. Everyone knows it’s a job. Being able to be open with friends and family has a big effect on happiness, IMHO!
