Ticos often don't like prostitution, but tolerate it because it's part of their tourism economy, which accounts for 80% of national income. Of that 80%, 12% is derived directly from prostitution. Although not a client, I have numerous friends who work in the "ambiente" in San Jose and in Jaco. Nice people, poor women...and the most likely scam for the tourist is the "request for money" scam, where after you return home, you begin to recieve requests for mmoney, which are sent by e-mail or Whatsapp messages.
The real elephant in the room regarding C.R. prostitution IMHO is the drug use. Many sex workers in San Jose are now using ketamine (a powerful animal tranquilizer) in order to cope with the work, which is often humiliating for the women and/or gay prostitutes working in C.R.
