id: 1101824 - Text: It's not a "lifestyle choice." Sex work just becomes a viable "option" when pain & destructive thinking become normalized, most often as the result of childhood trauma. Said trauma can come in many forms. They often see it as a way of liberating themselves, or regaining control of their body that's been objectified or violated previously. "I might as well get paid for it...." Heard those exact words thousands of times. It's the worse type of attention for someone starving for love, or a nurturing environment. I've been neck deep around sex work for 20 + years, and as a man, this shit breaks my heart.
Those feelings of self-worth become reliant on the industry, both from patrons/clients....and the other people they work with - which become the friends they often spend the most time with. The money becomes a false validation of the control they think they have. The other girls tend to make it easier to continue. Whether it's stripping, massage parlors, dominatrix shit, escorting, or porn...it's so easy to get caught in the trap. There's too much misguided support within all of it. Couple that with a hypocritical society that spends money on it, even glorifies aspects of it....but judgmental, secretive, & critical at the same time.
We may all be damaged in some way....but sex work is one of the few industries that will almost always make things worse. You have to flip a switch off to do it, dig your heels in, and it's incredibly difficult to turn it back on... so it becomes more of a dimmer that sits in the middle somewhere. Whatever name they go by, becomes this personality they believe they can separate from their true selves. It's impossible to do, and the two worlds will always be conflated. It almost always negatively impacts one's ability to have the type of relationships they want. So, the choice is to be around people who accept it, or even encourage it....which often results in resentment.
Amber...you seem like an awesome woman. You're already way ahead of the curve with this bullshit. You can actually say what you're doing is wrong, and openly tell some of your story. Furthermore, you also know the likely sources of what led you this direction. Just know, free will is an illusion. Don't beat yourself up anymore, and let yourself off the hook. Environment shaped everything for your genes to express themselves the way they did. It's not your fault. Acknowledging that, and knowing it wasn't simply a "choice" that you made - can be a valuable tool in taking the next step.
You possess everything you need to hit the path you wanna be on (we all do)...but you need to work on healing yourself in the process. There are no real shortcuts, but I know what's helped me, and countless others with trauma, and/or addiction expedite the process. Plant medicines: Ayahuasca, Iboga, Psilocybin - with the aid of a guide, shaman etc. Couple that with consistent exercise & reasonably healthy diet. Easier said than done, I know.
